Katarina Barruk meets Norrlandsoperans symfoniorkester

Stage 1, Sara kulturhus, Skellefteå

Experience Katarina Barruk's unique voice and Ume Sami songs in grand orchestral arrangements. As guest artists in this special concert with the Norrlandsoperans symfoniorkester, we also hear Schubert, Brahms, and Dvorak.

When Umeå celebrated its 400th anniversary, she enchanted the audience at Rådhustorget with her strong stage presence, voice, and music. It was the first time Katarina Barruk met the Norrlandsoperans symfoniorkester, but fortunately not the last.

Katarina Barruk, who turns thirty this year, grew up in Lusspie (Storuman) and Gajhrege (Gardfjäll) and has been living in Oslo for a few years now. She sings in her native language, Ume Sami, a threatened language that she thus helps keep alive. Barruk's music also includes elements of yoik and vocal improvisation, and her acclaimed stage performances possess an earthy intensity, with equal parts vulnerability and strength.

To date, Barruk has released two albums, Báruos and Ruhttuo. In this unique concert, we will hear several of her experimental pop songs in symphonic attire, as well as works by composers from earlier times. Norrlandsoperans new chief conductor, Eduardo Strausser from Brazil, has composed the program, inspired by Barruk's music.
